hyacinth

Japanese: hyacinth
hyacinth

Zircon has a high refractive index and a strong brilliance, so that colorless and transparent zircon is the most similar of all gemstones to diamonds. Reddish zircon is called hyacinth, and the Japanese name fushinshiseki is a phonetic spelling of hyacinth (hyacinth was an ancient word meaning a blue gemstone, probably sapphire). The name zircon is thought to have some connection to the Arabic zerquin (meaning vermilion), the Persian zargun (meaning gold), or the French jargon (meaning a yellow, inferior diamond), but this is not certain.
