Khān al-Khalili (English spelling)

...Sultan Baibars (reigned 1260-77), who repelled both the Crusaders and the Mongol invasions, and other sultans and Mamluk generals, including Qalawun, Barquq, and Qa'it-Bai, competed to build religious facilities such as mosques, madrasas, tombs, and khanqahs (Sufi monasteries), as well as palaces, hospitals, caravanserais (funduks, khans, and qaisariyas), and hammams (public baths), some of which even remodeled entire neighborhoods (haras). Khan al-Khalili, now a tourist attraction with a souvenir market, was built by the Circassian emir Khalili, who destroyed a Fatimid cemetery, and most of the historical buildings remaining in the old city today are from the Mamluk period. The area around Ezbekiya, which is now a park and square in the city center, was once a marshland and pond, but after it was developed by an Uzbek emir, nobles' mansions and villas were built there, giving it its name.
