Osawa Pond - Osawa Pond

A pond located to the east of Daikakuji Temple in Kitasaga, Ukyo Ward, in the west of Kyoto City. Daikakuji Temple was originally the villa of Emperor Saga, and Osawa Pond is said to have been modeled after Lake Dongting in China. It is one of the oldest garden ponds and has been designated a national scenic spot. The cherry blossoms and autumn leaves along the pond's banks are beautiful, and the moon-viewing in autumn is particularly famous, making it known as a "poem of poetry." To the north of the pond are the remains of Nakoso Falls, which is also mentioned in the Hyakunin Isshu, and there is a stone Buddha from the Kamakura period on the pond's edge.

京都市西部、右京区北嵯峨(さが)の大覚(だいかく)寺の東にある池。大覚寺はもと嵯峨天皇の離宮で、大沢池は中国の洞庭(どうてい)湖を模してつくられたといわれ、最古の庭園池の一つとして国の名勝に指定されている。池畔のサクラや紅葉は美しく、ことに秋の観月は名高く、歌枕(うたまくら)として知られる。池の北には、百人一首にも詠まれた名古曽(なこそ)滝跡があり、池辺には鎌倉時代の石仏がある。
