…There are three student notes of lectures that Smith gave at Glasgow University in the 60s, one on rhetoric and the other two on law, and they are assumed to be quite close to the contents of his Edinburgh public lectures. His writings from this period (around 1750) are “Principles of the Guidance of Philosophical Research, Illustrated by the History of Astronomy” in the posthumous collection of essays “Essays on Philosophical Subjects” (1795) and two contributions to the “Edinburgh Review.” The former was written mostly during his time at Oxford and finished after his return home, and Smith subsequently wrote fragments on the history of ancient physics and the history of ancient logic and metaphysics, discussing the same theme. …
