Liú lí chǎng (English spelling)

Japanese: 琉璃廠 - るりしょう（英語表記）Liú lí chǎng

A shopping street in Beijing, China. Its name comes from the fact that there was a kiln for five-colored glazed tiles here during the Ming Dynasty. It is located to the west of the outer city, southwest of Zhengyangmen Gate. From around the time of Qianlong (reigned 1735-95), specialty shops selling books, the four treasures of the study, calligraphy, paintings, and antiques began to gather here, lining both sides of the hutong (alley) stretching about 1 km from east to west, and it became famous both at home and abroad as a market that collected the best of Chinese culture. In some ways, the quality of the street has improved since the liberation, as seen in the colored woodblock prints by Eihosai. Currently, the appearance of the street and the products on display are undergoing major changes, as symbolized by the construction of buildings following land readjustment.

中国，北京の商店街。名は明代に五色琉璃瓦の窯があったことにちなむ。外城の西より，正陽門の南西方にあたる。乾隆(在位1735‐95)ころより書籍，文房四宝，書画骨董などの専門店が集まってきて東西約1kmの胡同(小路)の両側に軒をつらね，中国文化の粋をあつめた市場として内外に名を馳せるにいたった。栄宝斎の彩色木版画のように，解放後に質的飛躍をとげた面もある。現在は区画整理にともなうビル化に象徴されるように，街の面影も店頭の商品も大きく変わりつつある。
