...After the invasion and destruction of the eastern tribes, the Slavs and then the Bulgars emerged as rulers of Thrace, and it flourished again during the First and Second Bulgarian Empires. However, from the second half of the 14th century it came under Ottoman rule, and was called Filibe, and became the administrative and garrison headquarters. Ottoman rule lasted for about 500 years, and it was reborn as Plovdiv in 1878.
