The valleys of Tyrol are said to be a treasure trove of folklore, where strange masked creatures appear in snowy villages from winter to spring, and unusual agricultural rites are held in spring. For Tyrolean farmers, the fight against General Winter begins on November 2nd, All Souls' Day (Day of the Dead), which marks its arrival, and culminates with St. Nicholas' Day and Twelfth Night, with Fasnacht (Carnival) approaching spring. Fas means faseln (to grow), and Fasnacht was a sacred night (Nacht) that has been celebrated since ancient times as a prelude to the growth and fruitfulness of the coming spring. …
