...Population: 356,000 (1996). Yafo (English name: Jaffa) is an old port city that appears in Egyptian documents from the 14th century BC. It flourished as a gateway to Palestine and was known as Yafa during the Islamic period. In 1909, a group of Jewish immigrants living in Yafo began construction on the sand dunes to the north, creating Tel Aviv. It subsequently absorbed many of the Jews who had immigrated to Palestine, and rapidly developed into a purely Jewish, yet Western-style modern city, becoming the largest city in Palestine in 1936. *Some of the terminology that mentions "Jaffa" is listed below.
