Oostende (English spelling)

Oostende (English spelling)
Ostende in French. A city in the province of West Flanders in western Belgium. Located on the North Sea coast west of Bruges. A small fishing village since the 9th century, a fortress was built in 1583, and Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI established the Ostend Company. In the 1720s, it prospered to rival London and Amsterdam in trade with India and Africa. Since Belgium gained independence in 1830, it has gained fame as a seaside resort city, with casinos, spa resorts, and promenades. As the port of departure and arrival for the Dover-Ostend route, it is a hub for major railway lines to Central and Eastern Europe, and the starting point of the Ghent-Bruges Canal. Along with Calais in France, it is a "gate to Europe". It is the base for Belgian fishing boats, and is famous for its spiny lobster and oyster catches. Other industries include shipbuilding, soap, tobacco, and lock manufacturing. During World War II, it was heavily damaged by German bombing, and the character of the town is said to have changed after the war when it was completely rebuilt. Population: 68,534 (1991 estimate).
