President

The viceroyalty, the highest administrative division, covered such a vast territory that it was difficult to govern with the means of communication available at the time. As a result, smaller administrative units, the capitania general and the presidencia, were eventually created. The viceroy, as the direct representative of the monarch, exercised supreme power within his jurisdiction.
