…In 1764, the British East India Company army led by Hector Munro defeated the combined forces of the Nawab of Bengal Mir Qasim, the Nawab of Oudh, and the Mughal Emperor here, establishing British rule over Bengal and India. Chausa, 12 km southwest, is the site of an ancient battle where in 1539 Bihar ruler Sher Shah defeated the army of the Mughal Emperor Humayun and forced him to retreat to the west. Buxar is also famous as a bathing spot on the Ganga River. …
