Nihonmatsu [city] - Nihonmatsu
A city in the northern part of Fukushima Prefecture's Nakadori region, bordering Fukushima City to the south. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. The city center, located in the lowlands of the Abukuma River, developed as a castle town for the Niwa clan, and is served by the Tohoku Main Line and the Tohoku Expressway. It is the commercial center of the surrounding area, with many people commuting to Fukushima City. In addition to local industries such as sake, furniture, and silk, the city has seen the automobile industry and other industries expand due to the active development of industrial complexes since the 1970s. There is Mt. Adatara and Dake Onsen. At the site of Kasumiga Castle, there is a monument commemorating the Nihonmatsu Youth Corps, and the Chrysanthemum Doll Festival is held in the fall. In December 2005, the towns of Towa, Iwashiro, and Adachi in Adachi County were incorporated. The city sustained damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 344.42 km2 . 59,871 people (2010).
