A city in the northern part of Fukushima Prefecture's Nakadori region, bordering Fukushima City to the south. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. The city center, located in the lowlands of the Abukuma River, developed as a castle town for the Niwa clan, and is served by the Tohoku Main Line and the Tohoku Expressway. It is the commercial center of the surrounding area, with many people commuting to Fukushima City. In addition to local industries such as sake, furniture, and silk, the city has seen the automobile industry and other industries expand due to the active development of industrial complexes since the 1970s. There is Mt. Adatara and Dake Onsen. At the site of Kasumiga Castle, there is a monument commemorating the Nihonmatsu Youth Corps, and the Chrysanthemum Doll Festival is held in the fall. In December 2005, the towns of Towa, Iwashiro, and Adachi in Adachi County were incorporated. The city sustained damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 344.42 ^km2 . 59,871 people (2010).

福島県中通り北部，福島市の南に接する市。1958年市制。阿武隈川の低地にある中心市街は丹羽氏の城下町として発達，東北本線，東北自動車道が通じる。周辺の商業中心で，福島市への通勤者が多い。清酒，家具，製糸などの地場産業のほか，1970年代からの積極的な工業団地の造成により，自動車工業などが進出している。安達太良(あだたら)山，岳(だけ)温泉がある。霞ヶ城跡には二本松少年隊顕彰碑があり，秋には菊人形祭が開かれる。2005年12月安達郡東和町，岩代町，安達町を編入。東日本大震災で，市内において被害が発生。344.42km²。５万9871人（2010）。
