Japanese: イド

Also called the id. A key concept in psychoanalytic personality structure proposed by Freud. It is an important element along with the ego and superego. It is characterized by being made up of various mental representations of instinctual impulses, following the pleasure principle whose sole purpose is the release of tension, and the process being unconscious. These instinctual impulses basically refer to the sexual drive (libido). Freud considered aggressive drives, in addition to sexual drives, to belong to the id, but this idea has not necessarily been accepted by his successors.

エスともいう。フロイトによって提唱された精神分析的人格構造論を構成する主要概念。自我，超自我と並ぶ重要な要素である。その特徴は，本能衝動の種々の心的表象からなり，緊張解放のみを目的とする快楽原則に従い，その過程が意識されない点にある。この本能衝動は基本的に性衝動（リビドー）をさしている。フロイトは性衝動のほかに攻撃衝動をもイドに属するものとみなしたが，この考えは彼の後進者たちに必ずしも受け入れられていない。
