Also called the id. A key concept in psychoanalytic personality structure proposed by Freud. It is an important element along with the ego and superego. It is characterized by being made up of various mental representations of instinctual impulses, following the pleasure principle whose sole purpose is the release of tension, and the process being unconscious. These instinctual impulses basically refer to the sexual drive (libido). Freud considered aggressive drives, in addition to sexual drives, to belong to the id, but this idea has not necessarily been accepted by his successors. → Related topics Psychoanalysis | Unconscious Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
