[1] 〘 noun 〙 A temple with a large scale or structure. Daigaran (large temple building) . ⇔ Kodera (small temple). ※Man'yoshu (late 8th century) 4.608 "Thinking of a person who is not in love with me is like bowing my head to the rear of a hungry ghost in a large temple." [2] The common name of Shokomyo-in Temple, which was located in Shimotoba, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City. Dai-ji [Great Temple]

〘 noun 〙 A large temple in terms of structure and number of monks. A government temple whose main expenses were the repair costs of the buildings and pagodas and the offerings for the monks were subsidized by the state. Odera. ※Nihonryakki (around 1596): "These four great temples are places of prayer for the whole country and for the Imperial Palace." [Hoenjurin]
