Lupus erythematosus is also called lupus erythematosus. It is a type of collagen disease. It is broadly divided into discoid lupus erythematosus and systemic lupus erythematosus, but the latter is designated as a specific disease (incurable disease) and is explained separately, so here we will discuss the former.

Discoid lupus erythematosus

It appears as a clearly demarcated erythema with scales on the face, especially on the cheeks, nose, lips, and ears, mainly in sun-exposed areas, and progresses chronically, leaving behind atrophy, pigmentation/loss, and telangiectasia. It is most prevalent in young adults in their 20s and 40s, with no gender predilection. Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is the name of a type of skin rash, and while it often appears as a skin rash of lupus erythematosus limited to the skin, it can also be seen during the progression of systemic lupus erythematosus (abbreviated as SLE). Even if this rash is the only symptom, if it occurs multiple times on the trunk from the neck down or on the back of the hands, transition to SLE must be considered. An autoimmune mechanism is thought to be the etiology. Treatment involves avoiding sunlight and topical application of corticosteroids.

円板状エリテマトーデス

顔面、とくに両頬(ほお)、鼻背、口唇、耳介など、おもに日光露出部に生ずる境界鮮明な鱗屑(りんせつ)を付着する紅斑としてみられ、慢性に経過し、萎縮、色素沈着・脱失、毛細管拡張を残す。20～40歳代の青壮年に好発し、性差はない。円板状エリテマトーデスdiscoid lupus erythematosus（DLE）とは皮疹(ひしん)の病型名で、多くは皮膚限局性のエリテマトーデスの皮疹として出現することが多いが、全身性エリテマトーデス（略称SLE）の経過中にもみられることがあり、またこの皮疹のみであっても、頸部(けいぶ)から下方の躯幹(くかん)や手背などに多発する場合は、SLEへの移行も考えなくてはならない。自己免疫的機序が病因として考えられている。治療は日光を避けるほか、副腎(ふくじん)皮質ステロイド薬の外用療法などが行われる。
