A village in Ono County, northeastern Gifu Prefecture. Population 4,625 (1995). It is a farming and mountain village in the Kohachiga River basin, a tributary of the Miyagawa River, and the village name is said to come from the old name of the Kohachiga River, "Nyu no Kawa." A small basin opens up along the west-flowing river, and the central settlement is on the river terrace on the southern bank. The mountainous region of the Hida Mountains, which stretches high on the eastern border with Nagano Prefecture, belongs to the Chubu Sangaku National Park, where alpine plants and ptarmigan can be seen. National Route 158 runs along the Kohachiga River, and since 1973 when the Norikura Skyline branched off from this and opened to the vicinity of the summit of Mt. Norikura, the number of tourists has increased significantly. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
