Onchi Koshiro - Onchi Koshiro

Printmaker. Born in Tokyo. In 1910 (Meiji 43), he enrolled in the Western Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, briefly switching to the Sculpture Department before dropping out. In 1911 (Taisho 3), while still a student, he founded the poetry and woodblock print coterie magazine Tsukuhae with Tanaka Kyokichi and others, and was the first in Japan to attempt an abstract style. In 1913, he founded the coterie magazine Kanjō with Muro Saisei and Hagiwara Sakutarō, and also designed the book. He was also very active in the field of bookbinding. In 1913, he became a member of the Japan Creative Print Association, and in 1931 (Showa 6), he became a standing committee member when the Japan Print Association was founded. In addition to exhibiting at official exhibitions, he joined the Kokugakai Print Department as a member in 1961. After World War II, he exhibited at the Sao Paulo Biennale and other exhibitions, contributing to the international advancement of Japanese printmaking. He has produced both abstract and concrete works, and many series including "Poem," "Form," "Allegory," "Lyric," and "Object." He has written many books, including "Contemporary Japanese Prints."

版画家。東京に生まれる。1910年(明治43)東京美術学校西洋画科に入学、一時彫刻科に転じ、のち中退。在学中の14年(大正3)田中恭吉らと詩と木版画の同人誌『月映(つくはえ)』を創刊し、日本最初の抽象作風を試みた。16年室生犀星(むろうさいせい)、萩原朔太郎(はぎわらさくたろう)らと同人誌『感情』を創刊し、その装丁も手がけた。装本図案の分野でも大いに活躍する。18年日本創作版画協会が発足して会員となり、31年(昭和6)日本版画協会の創設に際して常務委員となる。官展出品のほか、36年国画会版画部に会員として加わる。第二次世界大戦後サンパウロ・ビエンナーレ展ほかに出品、日本版画の国際的進出に貢献した。抽象、具象の両系列があり、『ポエム』『フォルム』『アレゴリー』『リリック』『オブジェ』ほかのシリーズ制作が多い。『日本の現代版画』ほか多数の著書がある。
