…A leading figure in the cultural and publishing world during the Republic of China period. His pen name was Yunwu, his small character was Rixiang, his given name was Zhirui, and his pen name was Xiu Lu, or Chuxiu. He was from Xiangshan County, Guangdong Province (now Zhongshan County). Wu Song taught English to Hu Shi and Zhu Jingnong at the China New Public School, and in 1912 became secretary to his fellow townsman Sun Yat-sen, who became provisional president. After serving as a professor at National University (later renamed the China Public School University Department and China University) and editor of the Peiping Democracy Daily, he became director of the Compilation and Translation Department of the Commercial Press in 1920 and general manager in 1930. During this time, he invented the square-numbered character checking method and book classification method, and compiled the Citizens Series, the World Library, the Collection of Series, and the Wang Yun Five Great Citations. …
