Catalog of nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies. NGC Catalog. For each celestial object, the type, species, celestial position (right ascension, declination), apparent brightness (magnitude), and apparent size (extent) are listed in a table. John Herschel published a table of 5,079 nebulae and star clusters in 1864 based on his own observations and those of his father, William Herschel, and in 1888 John Dreyer revised and republished it. Herschel's table was supplemented by Dreyer's own observations and those of several others up to 1887, resulting in a table of 7,840 nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies. Dryer's two additional tables are the Index Catalogue (IC), a table of 1,529 nebulae and clusters observed visually between 1888 and 1894, published in 1895, and the Index Catalogue II (IC II, published in 1908), a table of 5,386 nebulae and clusters observed visually and photographically until 1907. The table format is exactly the same as the NGC. These are collectively called the Dryer Catalogue. The NGC catalog was revised again in 1974 based on photographic observations and published as the Revised New General Catalogue of Non-Stellar Astronomical Objects (RNGC).

星雲，星団および銀河の目録。NGCカタログ。各天体について，種別やタイプ，天球上の位置（赤経，赤緯），見かけの光度（等級），見かけの大きさ（広がり）が表として記載されている。ジョン・ハーシェルが父ウィリアム・ハーシェルと自身の観測を合わせて 1864年に出版した 5079個の星雲，星団の表を，1888年にジョン・ドライヤーが改訂出版したもの。ハーシェルの表に 1887年までのドライヤー自身や他の数人の観測を補い，7840個の星雲，星団および銀河の表とした。ドライヤーによる二つの追加の表として，1888～94年に実視観測され，1895年に出版された 1529個の星雲，星団の表 IC（Index Catalogue）と，それ以後 1907年までに実視・写真観測された 5386個の星雲，星団の表第2 IC（1908出版）があり，表の形式は NGCとまったく同じである。これらをまとめてドライヤーカタログ（ドライヤー星表）という。NGC星表は写真観測に基づいて 1974年に再改訂され，RNGC（The Revised New General Catalogue of Non-Stellar Astronomical Objects）として出版された。
