Japanese oligochaetes are divided into 4 orders, 11 families and 45 genera, with 7 families living in freshwater, 4 on land and 2 on the coast. (1) Freshwater Aeolosomatidae are the most primitive of earthworms, with small bodies and unclear boundaries between body segments. They contain red, yellow or green oil droplets in their epidermis.
