Zeeland is the capital of the province of Zeeland in the southwest of the Netherlands, and is a commercial and industrial city with a population of 45,427 (2001). Located on the island of Walcheren, which is now connected to the mainland, it is known for its traditional textile industry and butter market. After acquiring city rights in 1217, it prospered as a base for trade with Britain and as an outer port for the commercial city of Antwerp (Belgian territory), and participated in the establishment of the Dutch East India Company. During the Dutch War of Independence, it was the last stronghold on the Spanish side in Zeeland, but was liberated in 1574 by rebel Calvinist pirates known as the "Sea Beggars." Remaining buildings include St. Nicholas Monastery, founded in 1150 (now the state assembly hall), and the 16th century city hall.
