…In the early Edo period, when the Besshi copper mine was opened by Izumiya (Sumitomo family), it developed as a mining town, and in the latter half of the Meiji period, the population reached over 12,400. In the Taisho period, the center of the copper mine moved west to the current Niihama city area, and the area that had been the center until then came to be called Kyu-Besshi. The area over the copper mine that connects Kyu-Besshi with Niihama city is called Dozanmine and is a hiking trail. …
