Lohengrin - Lohengrin (English spelling)

An opera composed by Wagner. Three acts. Based on a libretto written by the composer himself and based on German and Nordic legends. Completed in 1848, premiered in Weimar in 1850. Elsa, the daughter of a lord in the Brabant region of 10th-century Antwerp, is accused by Count Telramund to the king of a crime she did not commit. At the trial, Elsa tells the story of a knight in a boat pulled by a swan who once appeared to her in a dream. Soon the knight really appears, and he wins a duel with Telramund, proving Elsa's innocence. However, the swan pulling the boat is actually Gottfried, the lord's heir and Elsa's younger brother who was under the spell of Telramund's wife Ortrud. The knight and Elsa are married, but Elsa breaks her promise to not ask questions and questions the knight about his true identity, and the knight confesses in front of everyone that he is Lohengrin, the son of Parsifal who guards the Holy Grail. He tells Shiratori that since the sacred secret has been broken, he must return to his original world, then he returns him to his human form and leaves.

It is one of the most widely loved of Wagner's works, and in terms of musical form, it makes many groundbreaking attempts that are reminiscent of later music dramas, such as avoiding the insertion of individually independent arias and closely linking the progress of the play to the music, and using leading motives thoroughly to achieve thematic unity throughout the work. It was first performed in Japan in 1942 (Showa 17) by the Fujiwara Opera Company.

ワーグナー作曲のオペラ。全三幕。ドイツや北欧の伝説をもとに、作曲者自ら執筆した台本による。1848年完成、50年ワイマール初演。10世紀のアントワープ、ブラバント地方の領主の娘エルザは、無実の罪で、伯爵テルラムントから国王に訴えられる。裁きの場でエルザは、かつて夢に現れた、白鳥が曳(ひ)く小舟に乗った騎士の話をする。まもなく本当にその騎士が現れ、テルラムントと決闘して勝ち、エルザの身の潔白を証明するが、この小舟を曳く白鳥こそ、テルラムントの妻オルトルートの魔法にかけられたエルザの弟、領主の嗣子(しし)ゴットフリートであった。騎士とエルザは結婚式をあげるが、エルザが禁問の約束を破って騎士の正体を問い詰めたため、騎士は人々の前で、自分は聖杯を守護するパルジファルの子ローエングリンであると告白。聖なる秘密が破られたうえは元の世界に帰らなければならないと告げ、白鳥を人間の姿に戻して去ってゆく。

　ワーグナーの作品中もっとも広く親しまれているものの一つであるが、音楽形式の面においても、個々に独立したアリアの挿入を避けて劇の進行と音楽を密接に関係づけ、また示導動機の用法を徹底させて作品全体の主題的統一を図るなど、後の楽劇に通じる画期的な試みが少なくない。日本初演は1942年（昭和17）藤原歌劇団。
