A general term for birds of the passerine order, family Ptilonorhynchidae. They are also called bowerbirds. This family consists of 17 species in 8 genera, and is distributed in New Guinea and its neighboring islands, as well as Australia. Most species have a unique ecology in which they build elaborate structures on the ground during the breeding season, where males display to attract females and mate. The name bowerbird comes from the ecology that allows them to build these special structures. They are 23-38 cm in length, roughly the size of a thrush or a jay.
