Japanese: ルリカケス(瑠璃橿鳥) - ルリカケス（英語表記）Lidth’s jay

A bird of the crow family in the order Passeriformes (illustration). Total length is about 38 cm. This beautiful jay is endemic to Amami Oshima, Kakeroma Island, and Ukejima in Kagoshima Prefecture. Its forehead and throat are black, and its head, neck, chest, coverts, flight feathers, and tail are deep purple, while its back and belly are chestnut brown. The tips of its flight feathers and tail feathers are white. The tip of its beak is yellowish-white, with a dark blue base, and its legs are black. It lives as a resident bird in evergreen broadleaf forests and farmland near forests. It nests in the hollows of large trees in March and April. However, recently some of them have started nesting in the door pockets of houses on Amami Oshima.

スズメ目カラス科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約38cm。鹿児島県の奄美大島と加計呂麻島，請島に特産の美しいカケスで，額とのどは黒く，頭頂から後頸（こうけい）と胸，雨覆や三列風切，尾は濃紫色，背と腹は栗色である。風切羽と尾羽の先端は白い。くちばしは先半分が黄白色，基部が暗青色，脚は黒い。常緑広葉樹林や林の近くの農耕地などに留鳥として生息している。3～4月に，大きな木の樹洞の中に営巣する。しかし，最近奄美大島では人家の戸袋に営巣するものもある。
