...However, you can confirm their existence by their distinctive chirping sound. The extinct Stephen's Wrasse Traversia lyalli has brown head, back and upper wings, olive-coloured neck and belly with grey scaly spots. This species was described in 1894 based on a dozen birds captured by the lighthouse keeper's cat on Stephen Island, off the northern coast of New Zealand's South Island. It has not been seen since then and is considered extinct.
