Pantikapaion

...Population: 178,300 (1991). Originating from the Greek colony of Pantikapaion, it later became the capital of the Bosporan Kingdom, and in the 10th to 12th centuries came under the control of the Principality of Tmutarakan. It later became Turkish territory, but after the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca (1774) as a result of the Russo-Turkish War, it became Russian territory.
