1869‐1943 Korean scholar. His pen name was Jahyon. His pen names were Kanjeong, Sanghyun, and Munenkosa. He was born in Goesan County, Gyeonggi Province. He served as an instructor and principal of a foreign language school, and a member of the Government-General's Korean History Editing Committee. He was not only engaged in education and research, but also served as an officer of the Ceremonies Office and the Buddhism Promotion Association, and made an outstanding contribution to social education. He wrote many books covering religious history, customs and folklore, including History of Korean Christianity and Diplomacy, A Study of Korean Women's Folklore, A History of Korean Haego Flowers, and A Study of Korean Shaman Folklore, and was a pioneer in these fields. His main work, A General History of Korean Buddhism (1918), was compiled by extensively researching Buddhist literature and materials, even collecting now-defunct inscriptions.
