A comprehensive university in Leipzig, Germany. Founded in 1409 by the Grand Duke of Saxony, the university was founded by teachers and students who had moved from the University of Prague. In the 15th century, it developed into the largest university in northern Germany. In the 16th century, it became more humanistic under the influence of P. Melanchthon, and in 1558, J. Comellarius established the school regulations, bringing it to its peak. It then went through a period of stagnation, but regained its fame in the late 19th century. In 1953, it was renamed Karl Marx University Leipzig, but in 1990, the former name was restored. The great writer Goethe and the great composer R. Wagner also studied here. Currently, it has faculties such as theology, law, history, art, and oriental studies, languages, education, mathematics, computer science, life science, pharmacology, psychology, physics, earth science, chemistry, mineralogy, social science, philosophy, sports science, veterinary medicine, and medicine, as well as affiliated facilities such as the Institute of German Literature.
