Karukaya

Japanese: カルカヤ
Karukaya
A general term for the perennial grasses of the Poaceae family, Megarkaya and Ogalkaya, but the former is often used. Megarkaya grows in the mountains and fields of Honshu, Okinawa, and East Asia. The stems are somewhat thick and 0.7 to 1 m tall. The leaves are broadly linear with long white hairs growing sparsely at the base. In autumn, racemose flower spikes appear in the upper leaf axils. There are two types of spikelets, male and bisexual, and the bisexual spikelets have long spines. It is one of the seven autumn herbs. Ogalkaya (Suzumekarukaya), which is a different genus, has thin, hard stems and linear, narrow leaves.
