Yamamoto Hokuzan

A Chinese poet of the late Edo period. His name was Nobuari, and his pen name was Tenki. He was from Edo. He wrote one volume of Zuowen Shikō at the age of 28, one volume of Zuo Shikō at the age of 31, and two volumes of Xiaojinglou Shiwa at the age of 56. He rejected the theory that Ming poetry was fake poetry that plagiarized Tang poetry, that Tang Poetry Selection was a forgery, and that the freshness of Song poetry was the result of capturing the truth of Tang poetry. He also argued that poetry should not be centered on grammar and rhythm, but on freshness and spirit, and that his ideal writing style was Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan. During the Bunka era (1804-1818), he presided over the Chikutsutsumi Ginsha Poetry Society, and produced such disciples as Ookubo Shibutsu and Yanagawa Seigan, who completely changed the style of poetry throughout the country.

江戸後期の漢詩人。名は信有、字(あざな)は天禧(てんき)。江戸の人。28歳で『作文志彀(しこう)』1巻を、31歳で『作詩志彀』1巻を、56歳で『孝経樓詩話』2巻を著す。古文辞(こぶんじ)説を排撃し、明(みん)詩は唐詩を剽窃(ひょうせつ)した偽詩であり、『唐詩選』は偽書であり、宋詩(そうし)の清新は唐詩の真を得たものといい、詩は格律や神韻を主とすべきではなく、清新性霊を主とすべきであると主張し、文章は韓愈(かんゆ)、柳宗元(りゅうそうげん)を理想とした。文化(ぶんか)年間（1804～18）竹堤吟社(ちくていぎんしゃ)を主宰し、門下から大窪(おおくぼ)詩仏、梁川星巌(やながわせいがん)らを輩出し、天下の詩風を一変した。著書は前記のほか多方面に及ぶ。
