Shiokara tomfly (salted dragonfly) - Shiokara tomfly (English spelling) Orthetrum albistylum speciosum
An insect of the order Odonata, family Lithoda (illustration). This is the most common dragonfly found on the plains of the Japanese archipelago, and can be found from Hokkaido to the southern tip of the Ryukyu Islands, and also in various parts of China and Taiwan, but is not found in Southeast Asia or eastern Siberia. However, a smaller original subspecies is known from Central Asia to Southern Europe. Body length is 50-55 mm. Females are commonly called straw-colored dragonflies, but even immature males are straw-colored, and only males turn black and develop white powder as they mature. The larvae grow in various shallow puddles on the plains, and are short-legged nymphs with bristly skin on their bodies.
