Also called "saccadic animals." A general term for species belonging to the phylum Psaccademia, including nematodes, rotifers, acanthocephala, gastrotrichum, kinorhyncha, and priapularia. Their bodies are cylindrical, bottle-shaped, or thread-like, and their surface is covered with cuticle. In general, the pharynx is well developed, but in parasitic species, some digestive organs are partially or completely degenerated. In the nervous system, many have a brain, ventral nerves, and lateral nerves. They have no circulatory or respiratory systems. They are generally dioecious, and some species exhibit heterogony in their life cycle. They are widely distributed in the ocean, freshwater, and on land, and many are parasitic. Parasitic species are mainly parasitic on arthropods and vertebrates, but there are also many that parasitize plants.Pouch animalPlease see the "Pouchworm" page.
