Hallāj (English spelling) al-usayn b. Manūr al-allāj

A Muslim mystic born in Iran. He began Sufism at a young age and studied under Sahl al-Tustari (818/819-896?) and Junayd. However, he was excommunicated by Junayd for boldly preaching his mystical ideas to the public. He traveled all over the world, from Turkestan to India, preaching his mysticism and gathering many disciples, but he was arrested in Baghdad, imprisoned for a long time, tried and executed. However, later Sufis highly praised him as a martyr who sacrificed his life for the love of God, and his life became the subject of many hagiographies and poems. His works, the Book of the Tower-Shine and his poems, remain to this day.

イスラム教の神秘家。イランに生まれる。若年のころからスーフィズムに入門し、サフル・トゥスタリーSahl al-Tustarī（818／819―896？）とジュナイドに師事した。しかし、神との神秘的合一の思想を大胆に一般に唱導したためにジュナイドから破門された。彼は、トルキスタン、インドに至るまで、各地で自己の神秘思想を説いて回り、多くの弟子を集めたが、バグダードで逮捕され、長期間にわたる監禁と裁判のすえ、壮絶な刑死を遂げた。しかし、後のスーフィーは、彼を、神の愛のために命を捧(ささ)げた殉教者として高く評価し、その生涯は多くの聖者伝や詩の題材となった。彼の作品では『タワーシーンの書』と詩が現在まで残っている。
