Sueyoshi Akabane

Japanese: 赤羽末吉 - あかばすえきち

Born: May 3, 1910, Tokyo
[Died] June 8, 1990. Picture book author in Yokohama. In his youth, he traveled to Manchuria (northeastern China) and returned to Japan after World War II. He taught himself how to draw, and exhibited at art exhibitions, winning awards. He attracted attention as a picture book author with "Kasajizo" (1961), and thereafter worked on turning folk tales into picture books. Based on the techniques of Japanese painting, he opened up a unique realm in composition that made use of the shape of the picture book, and played a leading role in the Japanese picture book world. His major works include "Suho's White Horse" (61), "The King and His Nine Siblings" (69), and "The Big, Big Sweet Potato" (72). In 1980, he won the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration.

絵本作家。青年期，満州 (中国東北部) に渡り第2次世界大戦後帰国。独学で絵をかき，美術展に出品，受賞。『かさじぞう』 (1961) で絵本作家として注目され，以後，民話の絵本化に活躍。日本画の画法をもとに，絵本の形を生かした構図に独特の境地を開き，日本の絵本界に指導的役割を果した。主要作品『スーホの白い馬』 (61) ，『王さまと9人のきょうだい』 (69) ，『おおきなおおきなおいも』 (72) など。 1980年国際アンデルセン賞の画家賞受賞。
