Born: May 3, 1910, Tokyo [Died] June 8, 1990. Picture book author in Yokohama. In his youth, he traveled to Manchuria (northeastern China) and returned to Japan after World War II. He taught himself how to draw, and exhibited at art exhibitions, winning awards. He attracted attention as a picture book author with "Kasajizo" (1961), and thereafter worked on turning folk tales into picture books. Based on the techniques of Japanese painting, he opened up a unique realm in composition that made use of the shape of the picture book, and played a leading role in the Japanese picture book world. His major works include "Suho's White Horse" (61), "The King and His Nine Siblings" (69), and "The Big, Big Sweet Potato" (72). In 1980, he won the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration.
