Yoshimitsu Yoshihiko

Philosopher. Born in Kagoshima Prefecture. After graduating from the First Higher School and the Department of Ethics at the Faculty of Letters of Tokyo Imperial University, he studied in France, where he was taught by Jacques Maritain. After returning to Japan, he taught philosophy at Sophia University and Tokyo Kokyo Theological Seminary, and also served as a lecturer at his alma mater. During his student years, he was influenced by Father Soichi Iwashita and converted from Protestantism to Catholicism. He became a representative figure in the Catholic intellectual world, and left behind many works. He recognized the "philosophy of eternity" in the synthesis of Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas, preached Christian humanism, and criticized modern and contemporary thought.

哲学者。鹿児島県生まれ。第一高等学校を経て、東京帝国大学文学部倫理学科を卒業後、フランスに留学、ジャック・マリタンの指導を受け、帰国後は上智(じょうち)大学、東京公教神学校で哲学を教え、母校の講師も兼任した。学生時代に岩下壮一神父の影響で、プロテスタントからカトリックに改宗、カトリック思想界を代表する人物として活躍し、多くの著作を残した。アリストテレスとトマス・アクィナスの総合に「久遠(くおん)の哲学」を認め、キリスト教的ヒューマニズムを説いて、近現代思想を批判した。
