A traditional university in Montpellier in the south of France. Medical education was already well established in the 12th century, but it was not officially recognized by the Pope until 1289. In the 14th century, it became one of the important centers of medical research in Europe. It went into decline in the 15th century, but was revived in the 16th century, becoming a center of the French Renaissance, with Rabelais among its students. Currently, it is divided into a first university for medicine and social sciences, a second university for natural sciences, and a third university for literature.
