A city in central Iwate Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. Tonan Village was incorporated in 1992. It is the prefectural capital. It occupies the mountainous area in the northern and eastern part of the Kitakami Basin, and the city is located at the confluence of the Kitakami River and its tributary, the Shizukuishi River. The Tohoku Main Line, Tohoku Shinkansen, and Tohoku Expressway pass through the city, and the Yamada Line and Akita Shinkansen (Tazawako Line) branch off from it. Morioka Castle (Kozukata Castle) was built by two generations of Nanbu Nobunao and Toshinao at the end of the 16th century, and the city developed as a castle town with a land area of 200,000 koku. The prefectural office was established in 1871, and it is the administrative, cultural, and transportation center of the prefecture. The value of manufactured goods shipped is 223.3 billion yen (2003), the fourth highest in the prefecture. Dairy and textile industries, traditional Nanbu iron kettles, Nanbu kiri, etc. are produced, but the tertiary industry population is high at 80% (2005), and the city has a strong tendency to be a consumer city. The Nakatsugawa River flows through the center of the city, and the central shopping district stretches from the old town in the east to the station in the west. There is Iwate University, the Tohoku Agricultural Research Center, Iwate Park (the remains of Furukata Castle), Ishiwarizakura (a natural monument), and the remains of the Kuriyagawa Fortress. In the west, Tsunagi Onsen springs spring up. The Chagu Chagu Umakko is famous. In January 2006, Tamayama Village, Iwate County, was incorporated into the city.
