A cone-shaped volcano on the northwestern shore of Lake Managua in western Nicaragua. It is 1,258 meters above sea level. It is part of a chain of more than 20 volcanoes that stretches southeast from Cosiquina Volcano in the northwestern tip of Nicaragua, and has frequently undergone violent eruptions. In its 1609 eruption, it completely destroyed the former city of Leon, which was located on the shores of Lake Managua at its western foot. After the 1905 eruption, volcanic activity became quiet, and trees now grow up to near the summit. [Tajima Hisashi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
