Located in the O-Sado Mountains in the western part of Sado Island, western Niigata Prefecture, this mountain is the highest point on Sado Island. It is 1,172m above sea level. It is mainly composed of Neogene tuff, shale, and volcanic rocks, with the upper part being andesite. It has a magnificent view of the entire island and the Niigata Plain. On the top of the mountain is Kinpokuyama Shrine, the guardian deity of Sado Province, and there was once a custom of worshipping the shrine as "Hatsu-Miyama." After the development of the Sado mines, it was highly revered by the Edo Shogunate, and the shrine buildings were also renovated by the magistrate's office. Cattle and horses are grazed on the flat land on the mountainside, and rhododendrons grow in clusters on the mountaintop. It belongs to the Sado-Yahiko-Yoneyama Quasi-National Park.
