Mengs, Anton Raphael

Born: March 22, 1728 in Ausch, Bohemia
Died June 29, 1779. German painter in Rome. In 1741 he went to Rome and copied Raphael's work for Augustus III, Duke of Saxony, and in 1744 became court painter. From 1755 onwards he was mainly active in Rome. He also produced works at the courts of Naples and Madrid. He was friends with JJ Winckelmann, and was a classical painter, specialising in religious paintings and pastel portraits, becoming one of the leaders of the classical movement of his time. His main work was the ceiling painting "Parnassus" (1761) in the Villa Albani. His books include "Reflections on Taste and Beauty in Painting" (Gedanken über die Schönheit und über den Geschmack in der Malerei) (62).
