〘 noun 〙 (━suru) ① To watch over; to keep watch. Also, the person who does so. ※Ryo Gikai (718) Maintenance "In general, there are only two government ships, <abbreviated> two soldiers and one prison guard" [Fukuei Zensho - Hokobu, Shuei Kyuen] ② A prison official who is in charge of watching over prisoners, making them work, and administering prison affairs.
