Queen of Scots. Reigned 1542-67. Lifelong rival of Queen Elizabeth I of England. She ascended to the throne at just one week after her birth when her father, King James V, died. In 1548, at the age of six, she was engaged to the Dauphin of France and travelled to France, where she was educated at the royal court and grew into a beautiful and charming woman. She married the Dauphin in 1558. Her husband ascended to the throne as Francis II the following year, but he died of illness a year later, so she returned to Scotland in 1561. At the time in Scotland, factional conflicts among the nobility were extremely fierce, combining with feuds between Protestants and Catholics, and between pro-English and pro-French factions.

スコットランド女王。在位1542‐67年。イングランド女王エリザベス1世の生涯のライバルであった。父王ジェームズ5世が死去したため生後1週間で即位。1548年，6歳でフランス皇太子と婚約してフランスに渡り，以後その宮廷で教育をうけ，美貌で魅力に富む女性に成長した。58年皇太子と結婚。翌年夫はフランソア2世として即位したが，1年後に病没したため，61年帰国した。当時のスコットランドでは，貴族の派閥間抗争が新教徒と旧教徒，さらには親イングランド派と親フランス派の確執と結びついて激烈をきわめていた。
