A snail shell of the family Oryctolagusidae (illustration). The shell is oval and robust, about 2 cm high and 1.2 cm in diameter. The coil is cone-shaped and elevated, with seven floors. There are about 20 vertical ribs, which intersect with spiral ribs. This gives it its name, as it looks like a straw mat. It is yellowish-white in colour, with black-brown bands below the sutures and around the edges. The shell opening is rounded, with a thick outer edge and a white smooth layer extending towards the axis. The upper and lower edges of the shell opening are short and grooved. The operculum is yellow and thin. The soft body has a long foot with two sensory projections at its rear end.

オリイレヨフバイ科の巻貝（イラスト）。殻は卵円形で堅固で，高さ2cm，径1.2cmくらい。巻きは円錐形に高くなり，7階。縦に肋が約20本あり，これに螺肋（らろく）が交わる。これがむしろのように見えるのでこの名がある。黄白色で縫合の下や周縁には黒褐色帯がある。殻口は丸みがあり，外方の縁は厚く軸側には白い滑層が広がる。殻口の上下の端は短く溝状になる。ふたは黄色で薄い。軟体の足は長く，後端に2本の感覚突起がある。
