…This cloth band was replaced by an elaborately decorated gold band during the reign of Justinian I (Eastern Roman Emperor, reigned 527-565), which developed into the luxurious crown of today. There are two crowns currently used by the British royal family. The St. Edward's Crown, which has been used since Charles II (coronated in 1661), is made of pure gold and is heavy (about 30 kg), so it is only ceremonially placed on the head of the king during the coronation. The Imperial State Crown, made for Queen Victoria's coronation, is used on the head of the king on the way home from the coronation and afterwards. The latter is set in platinum and decorated with over 2,300 diamonds, about 300 pearls, more than 10 sapphires, emeralds, and several rubies. Among the diamonds is the 309-carat Star of Africa (which is only inserted when the crown is not in use), and among the rubies is the Black Prince, a small hen's egg-sized (over 5 cm) stone. …
