A movement that developed in the northern German city of Münster as part of the urban Reformation movement. In early 1533, the Reformation received official recognition from the bishop, but it intensified under the leadership of preacher Bernhard Rothmann (c. 1495-?), and in February 1534 the Anabaptists legally seized power in the city. Meanwhile, the Melchiorite Anabaptists, who had been persecuted in the Netherlands, viewed Münster as the New Jerusalem and flocked there in large numbers. Thus, surrounded by the armies of both old and new princes, the millennial kingdom of the Anabaptists was established. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
