Minami Shiga Ruins

Japanese: 南滋賀遺跡 - みなみしがいせき

Located in Minamishiga-cho, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, this Yayoi period cemetery was uncovered in 1958 during an excavation carried out to expand the playground at Shiga Elementary School. The ruins are located on a plateau stretching from the Hiei mountain range toward Lake Biwa, at an altitude of about 110m, 15m above the lake surface. The excavated remains date to the end of the early to middle Yayoi period, and include a square ditch (2m wide, 1-2m deep) with sides of about 10m, more than 20 pit graves, and two jar coffin graves. The square ditch had intact jars placed in it at 3-5m intervals, and it later came to be known as a square ditch grave.

滋賀県大津市南滋賀町にあり，1958年に志賀小学校の運動場拡張のための発掘調査で明らかになった弥生時代の墓地。遺跡は，比叡山塊より琵琶湖に向かってのびる台地上に立地し，標高は110m前後で，湖水面より15mの高さにある。発掘された遺構は，弥生時代前期末から中期にわたるもので，一辺約10mの方形にめぐらされた溝状遺構(幅2m，深さ1～2m)，土壙墓20基以上，壺棺墓2基がある。方形の溝状遺構は，溝中に3～5m間隔で完形の壺が置かれており，のちに方形周溝墓という名で呼ばれるようになった。
