The Iron Age culture of Europe. It began in the 5th century BCE, succeeding the preceding Hallstatt culture, in the area from eastern France to the middle Rhine and southern Germany, and then spread widely throughout central and western Europe, surviving until the 1st century BCE. It was named after the La Tène archaeological site on the north shore of Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland, where a large number of iron weapons, accessories and other artifacts were discovered in 1857. It is believed to be the culture left behind by the Celts, who appear in the records of Greek and Roman classical writers and in Caesar's Gallic Wars.
