Mitatee - Mitatee

Japanese: 見立絵 - みたてえ

A witty painting that depicts a well-known classical subject in a contemporary style. It is especially common in ukiyo-e. It ignores the times and dresses familiar people from stories, historical events, and folklore in contemporary clothing and manners, and aims to enjoy their unexpected transformation. It is a prerequisite that the artist and the viewer have roughly the same amount and quality of education. In that sense, it is no coincidence that many examples of this style are found in Edo ukiyo-e from the mid-Edo period onwards, when a rich civil culture matured. Suzuki Harunobu was noted as a master of mitate-e, and was skilled in elaborate mitate-e in works such as "Mutama-gawa," based on waka poetry, and "Hakkei Zashiki" (Suzuki Harunobu) based on "Hakkei Shosho."

すでによく知られた古典的な題材を当世風になぞらえて表した機知的な絵画。とくに浮世絵に多い。物語や故事、伝承によってなじみの深い人物に、時代を無視して当世風の服装や風俗をさせ、その意外な変貌(へんぼう)ぶりを楽しもうとするもので、画家と鑑賞者との間にほぼ等量等質の教養が用意されていることを前提条件とする。その意味で、濃密な市民文化の成熟をみた江戸時代中期以降の、江戸の浮世絵に多くの作例がみいだされるのは偶然ではない。鈴木春信(はるのぶ)は見立絵の名手として注目され、和歌を踏まえた『六玉川(むたまがわ)』や「瀟湘(しょうしょう)八景」による『座敷八景』（鈴木春信）などの作品で、手のこんだ見立を得意とした。
