They are water bugs."② An aquatic insect of the Hemiptera (Hemiptera) family, Aselloides. Body length is about one centimetre. It is very similar to the woodlouse, but slightly larger. It has a dark yellow body with fine black horizontal stripes, and its middle and hind legs are long, making it suitable for swimming. It is found in ponds and marshes in Hokkaido, Honshu and Kyushu. Outside of Japan, it is found in the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, the Korean Peninsula and China. 《Season: Summer》③ An arthropod of the Crustacea (Isopoda) family, Aselloides. It is found among aquatic plants and on the muddy bottoms of ponds and marshes all over the country. Body length is about one centimetre. 〘名〙① 水中にすむ虫。※漢書列伝竺桃抄(1458‐60)賈第一八「蛭螾はひるのやうなものぞ。水虫ぞ」② カメムシ(半翅)目ミズムシ科の水生昆虫。体長一センチメートル内外。コミズムシ(フウセンムシ)にきわめてよく似ているがやや大形。暗黄色に細かい黒色の横縞があり、中・後肢が長く、泳ぐのに適する。北海道、本州、九州の池や沼に分布。国外では、千島、サハリン、朝鮮半島、中国に分布。《季・夏》③ 甲殻綱ワラジムシ(等脚)目ミズムシ科の節足動物。各地の池、沼などの水草の間や泥底に見られる。体長一センチメートル内外。形はワラジムシにやや似ており、七対のあしをもつ。④ 魚の異称。※蔵玉集(室町)「ふすゐ鳥〈猪〉 ちくろ〈海士〉水虫〈魚〉」⑤ ふつう足趾間に小さな水疱ができ、かゆみの強い病気。白癬菌が皮膚の最表層の角質層に寄生して生ずる。手指、爪にもできる。水瘡(みずくさ)。《季・夏》※俳諧・其袋(1690)冬「機布ちぢむ越の海西〈菊峯〉 水むしに妹が手の裏あれにけり〈百花〉」
